VMWare Slow shutdown with Windows 7 Shadow Copies and System Volume Information

I love VMWare, but one of my frustrations has been that when you ‘sleep’ a VM, Windows takes an absolute age to flush the VM from memory.

When you examine the disk activity from Resource Monitor, you can see that a lot of data is being written to System Volume Information folder. This is Windows basically storing a snapshot of the files due to System Protection being enabled on the drive.

Today I discovered that it is possible to disable System Protection for certain folders:


Adding your VM folders to the registry to prevent snapshots being taken significantly speeds up the shutdown of a VM on my system.
